The Visionary
A publication on psychometrics, written from inside an instrument's calibration.
Most writing about intelligence testing is written by people who have never had to norm anything. The Visionary is written by someone who is in the middle of it, with the dropout tables and the item statistics on the desk. It covers what tests can and can't tell you, which parts of the field's orthodoxy survive contact with data, and what the Scan's own calibration turns up as it goes.
The Visionary launches in March 2027. The Calibration Series is its precursor: one piece a month about building and calibrating the Scan, posted first on r/cognitiveTesting, where the arguments get tested in the comments, and archived here. The series runs until launch, and the launch builds on it.

What would it actually take to build a defensible high-range test in 2026?
Four factors killed the old high-range model: norming, leakage, practice, and machine solvability. Here is what a defensible instrument would owe in their place.

Vocabulary is one of the best measures of g we have, and that is exactly the problem
Vocabulary is among the most g-loaded subtests in any battery and the most sensitive to education, culture, and age. Both halves are true, and the tension points at what a vocabulary measure should actually count.

47 started, 8 finished, 6 reached The Zenith: ongoing remarks from calibrating a high-range test
The Scan's design, its numbers so far, where people stop, and what building an untimed instrument has actually involved.

Timing pressure conflates speed with ability, so let's get rid of it
The case for removing the clock: what timing constraints actually reward, what the establishment has already conceded, and what an untimed instrument costs in return.
The Scrolls
Each quarter, The Visionary reads one text alongside its readers and writes toward it. That companion canon is called The Scrolls, and its first entry is named with the first issue.
The first issue
The Visionary launches in March 2027. The simplest way to hear about the first issue is to follow u/VisionarySystems, where every piece is announced. If you would rather get one email when it goes out, send a note to the address below and you will be added by hand.
